Are Leadership Skills Necessary for College Success? Why or Why Not? by Daniel - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Leadership skill are necessary in pretty much everything in life. In college, however, the student will face a new level of competition that will increase the chance of success if the student possesses strong leadership skills. The obvious situations in which this skill is necessary is when they are assigned a group project. Without leadership, those can cause a large amount of frustration and wasted valuable study time. Every project requires a leader that can direct discussions while at the same time, maintain an opportunity for positive exchange of ideas. A strong leader will be able to facilitate the equal collaboration of all the parties involved in the project.

Outside of the classroom setting, good leadership will increase the chances of having a positive overall social college experience. One of the great opportunities that a college setting offers is the opportunity for ethnic and cultural exchange with other members of the student and faculty. A good leader will be able to benefit from this variety in a social setting.

A college student who participates in a sport will likely be asked to step up to a leadership role at some point. In sports, leaders are required before, during, and after a sporting competition. Before the competition, a leader will be able to effectively encourage the team members to do their share in training. During a sporting event, the leader makes sure that the team maintains it's focus and that every player does their job successfully. After the event, the leader can be instrumental in directing the energy, whether positive or negative.

Finally, I believe that leadership skills are present in every human being in a variety of forms. For many, this may seem obvious while for others it may appear non-existent. I believe that everyone, given the opportunity, will rise to a leadership role either during the college experience or later in life.
