I didn’t know how much a community meant to me understood what qualified as a community. I always thought a community was just a fancy word for city but a community it is also a place where people share an interest in a particular characteristic. This would make my school and AVID class my community, so it is my best interest to make these better anyway I can.
To help my school be a better place I decided to be a peer tutor and work hand and hand with students on a topic of their choice and to my better understanding. The peer tutoring works by having students come in for asking for a tutor and then the tutor exchanges contact information with the student as they work out the rest without the school. This is important because it makes the program more to the students than the school, I found that this makes students more comfortable to talk about their classes that they struggle in. It’s more than just a tutor, it’s also a mentor with weekly meetings gives me time to ask about grades, what’s improving, what’s not, and to given just give advise about not just that class but school in general. I may not be doing much for the school on a large scale but the individual help is great.
Avid offers lots for ways to assist me in school and so it’s only fair for me to assist the program back in ways they need. The AVID program has many fundraisers that I made sure participate in which didn’t even feel like community service but more of a hang out with my friends. AVID turn an act, community service, which used to be a chore to many people into something better. To add interest into any job is what makes that job not a job, the classes that do the best in are the ones I’m interested in and sophomore year english is a perfect example of this. English is my worst topic, I’m so bad at putting the extra time in my essays other than just reaching the word count. However this teacher had a way to make what I was writing relatable to me, making the writing situational, which then makes me interested, and being interested I want the work to be the best it can, not for the grade and for myself which is better in many ways.
