Get Set by Dania - November 2014 Scholarship Essay
Get ready, get set, go. You just culminated middle school and now you are off to high school. Crazy is it not it? One moment you are the king of your school, now you have to work yourself right back up. The higher the grade level, the more respected you are. Not only are you going to be the new baby of high school, you have four more years of schooling into your college year. Intimidated? The constant nervousness continues. But what do you do? How do you act? What do you wear? But most importantly, who are you? The juggling of these questions tackle you and strangle you, but there is hope.
Positivity. Merriam-Webster, dictionary.com, and even your mom would considerably agree that positivity is looking into the world and being positive or accepting. But the main purpose of being positive is not to necessarily be happy and cheerful all the time; it is making the best out of what seems to be the worst of situations. Whether it is writing a ten page essay in two weeks, running three miles for physical education, or failing math. These situations seem to be one of the worst of all, but writing a ten page essay enforces you to surpass your thoughts, running three miles will help you be a healthy teenager, and failing math grants you the opportunity of socializing with others to understand something. Having a positive mindset will not only take you far high school wise, but literally throughout your entire life. These skills that you learn in high school are crazy to think because these ideas not only will help you proceed in life, but will allow you to grow into your true identity; everyone, just like you, is struggling to find themselves. Viewing the best in any hardship will show the inner strength you have within.
Courage. Do you have a secret talent? Are you good at singing, dancing, or sports? Well guess what? High school offers plenty of clubs, sports, and programs that you have never had in middle school. High school has drama, theatre arts, and bands. Not to mention, high school has amazing sports programs if you are really passionate about the sport you play; you could possibly be scouted and even given a free ride to play college sports while in college. The opportunities that high school provides you are insane. The key to everything is courage, single yourself out from others and literally join something you see yourself doing for the rest of your life. Do not be afraid to speak up: you have a mouth, voice, and mind for a reason. Do what makes you happy, fight for what you believe, and never limit yourself. High school is yet a pool of endless possibilities.
Self-acceptance. Love who you are and embrace every bit of it. There is absolutely nobody in the world that can touch their toes like you do, that can dance like you, that can laugh like you, and that can smile like you; you are one in a million. You are not a prodigy, you are not perfect, you are not flawless- as Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj would say- you are you. If everyone was to “fit in” there would not be these amazing technological advances we have today. We would have still had to use typewriters and those bulky telephones. It is those crazy, nutty people that have influenced our society in a positive way; they are the few who have though out of the box and wanted nothing but success. Do not ever try being anyone but you, life already has something planned out for you.
The beginning of high school is the start to your life’s race. Middle school is your readiness, high school is your set up, and graduating is your thriving. Life is a race, you are constantly moving and going on whether you like to or not. All you need is a positive attitude, the courage to do what makes you happy, and self-acceptance. There is no guideline to successfully start high school; there is no wrong way to act, there is no wrong wardrobe, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with being yourself. High school is something you will remember throughout your entire life not because you were popular, not because you had the nicest clothes, not because of any materialistic things. It is something you will remember throughout your lifetime because it is what set you up to be the person you were destined to become.
