Successful Studying by DaNeisha - January 2014 Scholarship Essay

When I was younger, I didn't study. I thought that school was very easy and reviewing the things that I learned would be pointless. I had this mentality throughout middle school. When I was a freshman in high school, I thought it would be easy. It was. I barely had to study. My sophomore year is when I hit a wall. Algebra 2 was really hard fr me which upset me since I'm great at math. I was barely passing the class the whole entire year. On top of that, Chemistry wasn't as easy as I thought it would be, nor was Government and Economics. I had no idea what to do. I wanted to stay in marching band and softball so I had to change. I began to study and nothing worked. I would go into tutoring and understand what the teacher told me, but when I was on my own I had a hard time. Instead of just doing my homework blankly, I took my notes out next to me. I read over my notes and compared it to the questions asked in my homework. This worked for math and economics. Since my chemistry class was mostly done my computer and audio, I would listen to the audio recordings until I completely understood what was going on.

Using my notes to study helps a lot. It is better than assuming the work that one is doing is correct. A study group is also helpful. Working with friends and peers helps get different opinions in and different studying tactics are put out. Not everyone can have the same studying method. Sometimes rewriting notes can help; other times flash cards are the best way. no matter the case, studying is important. Having good grades homework and tests comes from knowing the material. Teachers can only teach us so much, and they can tell us how to study; however, they can't hand us a grade. Working hard for a good grade is a good feeling.
I like my studying habits. They have gotten me great grades and even tutoring positions to help my peers. I hpe my habits grow and improve once I get to college.
