Dear Highschool Freshman by Cynthia - November 2013 Scholarship Essay

I would say that the most valuable lesson I've learned in highschool was to not be afraid to try new things and to never try to fit in. Be you, be different.

Alot of times when freshman enter highschool all they worry about is being popular and having friends, they forget what highschool is about. Even I thought it was gonna be the end of the world if I wasn't part of the crowd. It is very intimidating when you enter a new enviornment but the worst thing to do is try to be another person just to fit in. Never stop being yourself and the right people will like you for who you are not who you pretend to be.

In my jungle of a highschool alot of the girls would like to dress in tight and revealing clothes to draw the guys attention like if they were animals. That was something that I definately never agreed with. The girls would crave attention from guys who only want them for how they look, not because of their personality or they way they treat eachother and that is wrong. On top of that, I give props to the girls and guys that have time to deal with a relationship in highschool. But I do not recommend it. Especially if you are the type of person to get distracted easily, you have the rest of your life ahead of you, relationships can wait.

I wish that I had been more open in trying new things in high school because now that I am a senior applying for colleges, I regret not doing any extra curriculars. I feel like I am not standing out against anyone else and that is something that colleges want. Someone who will stand out. If I would've known the feeling of disappointment that I have now when I was a freshman, I wouldve tried harder to join a club/organization or sport. Who knows maybe I could've been a star player, all because I actaully tried.

So hear is my advice to you, if you like something, go for it and if you don't try it anyway! These are the years that will open up your mind to so many opportunities and experiences, don't be like me and let it all pass you by. Just be yourself, try new things and don't let anyone keep you from doing what you want!
