Team Dynamics by Courtney - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Leadership skills are very necessary for college success, but knowing how to be led is equally important. College is a chance for students to gain experience and knowledge before entering the workforce. The two skills of leading and being led are very important skills that need to be acquired before graduation. Yes, intelligence and learning on an individual level are important too, but in the workforce, it is very rare that an individual will always work alone instead of in a group or team to complete projects and tasks.

Obviously, leadership is a topic that is discussed time and time again. Everyone wants their employees or students to be leaders because it separates them from the rest of the group in a positive way. Being able to effectively and efficiently lead a group of people in a project is an amazing skill to have and is extremely necessary for any organization. However, if there is a group of people who all consider themselves to be leaders, then nothing in that group can get done unless some individuals are willing to step down and be led. There is no shame in not being the leader of a group if that individual is a productive and effective member of the team. This is the reason that I believe that both of these skills are very necessary for college success, as well as success after graduation.

In summary, to leadership skills are important because they include both leading individuals and being led while still being an integral member of a team. To be a productive non-leader, one must understand how a leader guides the team and comprehend that there are some situations where one person is more qualified to be the leader than another. An individual recognizing that he or she isn’t the best person to lead the group in a particular task is just as important as that same individual stepping forward and becoming a leader in a situation where he or she is the most qualified to lead. Both of these situations help an individual to be a helpful member of a team and push the project that the team has been assigned toward completion.
