The Here and Now by Courtney - June 2014 Scholarship Essay

Too often we find ourselves trapped in a dream that we can live in a world of fantasy. Books seem to create a whole new standard for the way that we expect to live. The messages that are pushed are unrealistic and idealized. If I were to be an author, I would write about a girl. She would live in a world too beautiful to describe in any language. The world would have a name: Here and Now.

Here and Now is exactly where the girl would want to be and where she always would remain. The girl would have no name, because no one really does. The girl would live and die but never stay the same. She would grow like a flower grows in a field stretching and withering, but never disappearing. The girl would be as kind as a girl can be, and nothing short of ordinary, and as a result, absolutely unbelievably extraordinary. The girl would be a baby, then a child, then a teenager, then an adult, then an old lady, and then the dust beneath every other girl’s feet. She might go to college, she might have a family, and she might be you or me. She would be happy and sad and quiet and loud and real. She would be your friend, and she would have a story. She would be a story and that would be the best part. She would just live, just like anyone does, but she would live fearlessly because everything she does is published on a page.

It is too often that we forget that the most beautiful story is the one that we never read, but is lived parallel to us.
