Last Day of Life by Cosme - February 2014 Scholarship Essay
Steve Jobs (2005) made the following statement during his speech at the Stanford Commencement Address on June 12, 2005:
I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life,
would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many
days in a row, I know I need to change something. (para. 17)
After reading that passage, during the latter half of 2011 at the age of 23, I began to follow his morning routine. Soon enough, my answer was “No” for too many days in a row. Much akin to Mr. Jobs, cowardice in pursuing the goals of my heart could no longer be allowed. Change in my life was necessary in order to find a more meaningful reason for my existence. Deciding how to change my life was a very easy decision, for I constantly aspired to have a career involving electronics.
Proving to be the motivation I needed, the birth of my first daughter in November of 2012 inspired me to begin research on higher education institutions. DeVry University quickly became my college of choice and, in June of 2013, I enrolled. Earning a Bachelor of Science with a major in Electronics Engineering Technology is my first step toward improving my future and increasing my worth to the world.
At my current age of 25, I believe that all of my dreams are possible with proper effort. Pursuing education through DeVry University will create the opportunities needed for an upbeat future for me and my family. All the while, sharing my knowledge and leading others to work towards something greater through education will give the world a better chance at not only conquering what currently challenges humanity, but also any challenges which fate provides. DeVry is preparing me to meet all of these challenges.
