Is Education a Right or Privilege? by Corrie - January 2021 Scholarship Essay
In the United States, lower education, such as elementary school, middle school, and high school are a right and everyone deserves to receive this type of education. On the other hand, college is a privilege that should never be taken lightly. Higher education is an achievement that comes from hard work and dedication. If it becomes a free right, people will not work for it. They will expect to be given a grade without effort or think they can play today and continue to receive chance after chance. If higher education becomes a right, it will dilute the quality of it.
Very few things in this life are truly a right. We are privileged to have educational opportunities in this nation. Some countries have no such options. We are privileged to live in a nation where we have the chance to receive a higher education, but it must come from our own efforts, and not simply because colleges are obligated to take every person who applies, no matter their grades.
When you plan to attend college, you prepare by working harder when you are in lower education. Some colleges require specific grades, GPA scores, and other things because they are a prestigious college and people look to them for students that excel. Imagine a world where our abilities did not matter. It would be the end of excellence in every field of study in our world. Higher education must remain a privilege and not a right.
