The Evolution of my Dream Job by Ciera - June 2017 Scholarship Essay

When I was six years old, my creativity and imagination ran wild. I was filled with the desire to create and discover. So naturally, I proudly stated that one day I would be an artist and a scuba diver. These occupations seemed to make the most sense, because I felt that it was the best way for me to be happy.
A few years passed, and I was now in third grade. My mom worked at the YMCA, so I often spent my mornings and afternoons in the teen center. One day, they had us do an activity where we were to draw ourselves working our dream job. At this time in my life, I had decided that it would be absolutely wonderful to be a Taco Bell employee, since it was my favorite place to get food and I would be able to get discounts. With this job decision, I had begun to take into consideration financial benefits, even though it was certainly insignificant.
Once high school came along, I played around with many different possible occupations, as there was just so much that interested me. Freshman year, I started off the semester deciding that I would go to Harvard and become a lawyer. That thought, however, quickly faded. Later that year, I was in the midst of a biology class, watching a documentary about food animals. That is the moment when I recognized my intense love for animals. I became a vegetarian, and I soon started thinking that it would be pretty great to be a marine biologist, or perhaps a veterinarian. However, I tossed that idea to the side after some consideration, because I concluded that I would not be able to handle the blood and gore.
As my junior year was coming to a close, I became really attached to the idea of studying anthropology, then attending seminary school and becoming a pastor. I even met with a local pastor and received helpful information about what is required for the job and how to be successful. By this time, I had begun to think seriously about where I would be attending college after my senior year. I had previously decided that one of the most important determining factors when making my final selection for a college was their ranking for the major that I was looking to pursue. So in addition to thinking critically about college, I also began thinking deeply about my major.
A few months into my senior year, I realized that I did not want to follow the seminary route. Despite my attempts to ignore it, I felt pulled in the direction of an animal related major. I had placed this thought in the back of my mind every time it came up, because I was scared I would not be able to handle it. However, it became evident that being a veterinarian was what I really wanted to do. So, I began to watch various animal surgeries in order to become accustomed to the graphic procedures, and I even shadowed at a local veterinary clinic. I am now going to be a freshman at The Ohio State University in a few short months studying on the pre-veterinary track, and I could not be more confident.
