You're gonna believe them by cici - November 2014 Scholarship Essay

All too often young girls get caught up in the fairytale of finding a guy and living happily ever after. Many girls in high school think that the most important thing is having a boyfriend; that it means you’re pretty if you have boys chasing after you. Of course these are the poor girls you find crying in the bathroom stalls a month or two later with a broken heart. My advice to freshman girls is to focus on you. While Taylor Swift gets a lot of hate for dating loads of guys and only writing love songs, I do believe she sends out a good message in her song “Fifteen”.

When you first walk through the doors of high school for your first time it can be intimidating. “You say ‘Hi’ to your friends you ain't seen in a while, Try and stay out of everybody's way.” You don’t know many people and you just want to fit in with everyone else. Then you start “Hoping one of those senior boys will wink at you and say, ‘You know, I haven't seen you around before.’" Most freshman girls focus more on getting the cutie on the football team, and don’t realize that there are more important things in life.

Those girls who do get in a relationship feel like they are invincible. You can fly and do almost anything. Just the thought of kissing him gives you butterflies, and when he tells you he loves you “You’re gonna believe him”. At fifteen you are naive and think, “…there’s nothing to figure out”. However you need to “…count to ten, take it in, This is life before you know who you’re gonna be”. High school is about figuring out what you want to do for the rest of your life.

If I could go back to when “all I wanted was to be wanted” I would tell myself that “…in your life you'll do things greater than dating the boy on the football team.” You swear that one day you will marry him some day but then you will realize you have bigger dreams. My advice to incoming freshman ladies is to not get caught up in that fairytale and to focus on who you want to be.
