Leadership in College by Christian - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
College is hard. It’s not the same as high school and when you go in expecting to do great, with the same amount of effort you put in high school, it just doesn't work. That’s because college requires another strategy; one that requires greater commitment to discipline and organization. However, even with a new strategy, college can still be difficult without certain skills and qualities.
Leadership skills and qualities are highly necessary. The leadership skills and qualities I’m referring to are leadership for the self and others: a commitment and passion to personal goals and a commitment and passion to help others be their best. One must be committed to do the work required and to do it with passion and one’s best. This could be multiple drafts of written work, multiple readings, and hundreds of hours fine tuning one’s craft. It is to do the hard work steadily and readily always. It is to lead by example.
A commitment and passion to help others be their best to me means encouraging others to find within themselves the willingness for self-accomplishment. Allow me to give you an example. In the world of X-Men, the stories revolve around the problems mutant people have. Many of the problems come from their inability to control their powers, which at times can be deadly, causing pain to those around them and/or themselves. Professor Xavier, gives them encouragement, advice, and strategies to control their powers and their problems. A leader doesn't take away one’s responsibility to deal with one’s challenges but commits with passion to support a person or group of people to be their best.
All that said, you can’t be a leader to anyone if you can’t be your own personal leader to be the best you can be. In college you must write essays, you must read books, you must take tests, you must do homework, and you must build relationships. And these should be done as a leader would… with commitment and passion.
