Indolent to a Hardworking Student by Chrisean - July 2021 Scholarship Essay
I learned that hard work is not something that is given but earned. I did not realize this until In high school were everything changed. It started in elementary class where students are given easy assignments and grades based on their effort. Easy work equals easy results since the effort was minimal which explains why I never learned it. When I got up until Middle school the assignments and expectations were different from my elementary years.
First, the assignments were different and what I mean by this is we were supposed to show our work. Yes even in elementary we did this but the effort was easier. In middle school no, especially in math class where I struggled the most. I hated math for as long as I remembered and I struggle with this til today however I got better over the years by effort. I did not do this here when I made mistakes and even felt like giving up on learning math.
Math is one of the hardest subjects not because people say so because of how much effort you need to put into it. This is where high school came around and yes I struggled there as well. All different types of math, same foundation, and application; they all had it. In my others classes I did well in it but math absolutely not. It wasn't until I started to take math seriously is when I got my progress card and received an F there. I was shocked because I did the work in the classroom but it wasn't enough.
I asked myself why did I get a failing grade when I did the work. Until my teacher told Me I was a hardworking student who did their best but it wasn't the proper effort he said. I didn't know what he meant until he showed me my work. I did it until I realize I did the work but I wasn't applying myself more, I just did it to finish it and make it seem like I did hard work. This is where I gained a notion that hard work stems from actually putting in the effort, rather than completing a task just to finish it.
I took this lesson I learned from my failing math grade and earned a C on my final report card. I was extremely happy and proud that I made that grade. After all, I failed math and my others tasks because I did the work incorrectly. Without taking the time to correct my mistakes and not assess what I was doing. I learned that hard work is all about putting in the correct effort and not completing a task just because it's there. Today I am a hardworking student who is willing to pursue the correct results based on my effort.
