College Leadership by Chloe - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Leadership is not always about others. You need skills just to simply go to work on time, or pay bills. Leadership has always been more of an eternal existence rather than external. I promise you, no child has looked at the good "leadership" child and thought "wow, I want to be her/him" no, children despise the leading child. And that is because leadership is for ourselves, it is the motivation that allows us to try and keep being better than the person next to us, because some part of us is still a barbarian trying to fight the others away from our tribe. I believe leadership is necessary in college because we need some amount of ourselves to want to feel better than the person who skipped class or called into work. We have been programmed and told to be better than everyone around us no matter what the cost.

Everybody wants to know, "What are some leadership positions you have had?" and while I try and scrape together a good answer out of my nervous and blank mind it becomes apparent; no good leader knows when they are leading. The worst person to have leading is the man that wants so desperately to lead that they would pay millions just to get their opponent's name butchered on the evening news. A true leader is the person who does not want to be followed, they just want the world to live in peace and to have the integrity to not steal from one another and to not bomb one another over paper money. I do believe in leadership in college, I believe we should all become our own self appointed leaders, whom we never disagree with nor ever frown down upon. Because what leader is better than ourselves?
