In everything I am involved in , I try my best to to be the ideal example . I feel a “leader” should be the role model of the group. Showing leadership makes you a overall better person .
Even though I take the opportunity to lead as much as possible, I feel I take on a leadership the most in volleyball. Being a three year varsity player , the underclassmen look up to me . I do not feel like me being on varsity or being older is what makes them look up to me, it is because I express leadership towards the program. I am the one whom they come to as a “big sister” or sometimes motivate as a coach would.
Specifically, one incident that happened during my volleyball season, was when a girl who started following a bad path. She wasn't only a teammate to me, she was a friend ,sometimes even felt like family. The coach started to notice changes in my teammate. The coach ,her parents, previous volleyball players all had talks with her , but nothing seemed to work. Two other girls and I decided one day to take her to our team room and talk. The other girls yelled ,argued with her as if they were her parents while I sat there and listened at first. I realized she actually listened to me and trusted me because she made the other girls leave. She broke down in tears, told me she wasn't just acting out for no reason. We spent about an hour in that room talking about how things will get better, and doing bad in school will just make thing worse. We became closer ,and she started to come to me with all her problems, until she was switched into a military school by her parents.
What I do is considered leadership, because I'm looked at as a higher level & respected more as an individual. The lower levels come to me with their volleyball and outside problems. I try my best to to help them as much as my capabilities allow me to.
