The Evolution of a Six Year Old by Chelsea - June 2017 Scholarship Essay

Back when I was six years old, I still have the same amount of compassion for those around me as I do today. Although, back then I was chasing butterflies on the soccer field and dreaming of elaborate tea parties with imaginary princesses; I had an immeasurable amount of love for animals and people. I would watch hours of the Animal Planet to learn all that I could about taking care of animals, because my dream at the time was to become a veterinarian. After a few years of playing “doctor” with our family pets, my compassion did not waiver but shifted towards helping more people. Even in my six year old mind, my goal was to help all those around me. As I entered high school, I knew that the best way I could serve others was through nursing. My character even at six years old displayed the qualities as a nurse to impact on people's lives by placing importance on education, servanthood, and leadership.
Nursing is an opportunity to positively impact lives. Most people become nurses in an effort to save lives; the drive stems from not solely compassion but also a resilient leadership. The ability to affect lives so personally can be a complicated responsibility that takes an insurmountable amount of strength and commitment to be a paragon for providing the exceptional healthcare. Exemplary nurses are distinguished when they progress forward against the pressure. But the most important reason for believing in nursing, is their ability to advocate for the needs of their patient. According to the American Nurses Association, “the nurse promotes, advocates for, and strives to protect the health, safety, and rights of the patient.” Nurses are leaders in our community who are committed to their patients and make every effort towards providing the highest levels of healthcare.
This is why I believe in nursing and I accept the challenge. I take pride in furthering my education to obtain my associates degree, but strive to get my masters degree. I believe education is important to provide quality patient healthcare. Currently, my undergraduate GPA is 3.53, with
all nursing related prerequisites at a 4.0 GPA. I have been listed on the President's List multiple times, as well as the Dean's List throughout college. I continuously challenge myself, recently taking honors Microbiology while also taking Anatomy and Physiology II. Both extremely difficult classes on their own. I joined the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. I had the same drive towards education back when I would study Animal Planet as a child. I believe by progressing in academia, I will begin delivering high quality patient care through education and research to raise the standards for meeting the needs of the patients.
Passion for serving others within the community is a quality that I strongly adhere to. With experience in volunteer work at Lighthouse Christian Fellowship, I learned that even the simplest donations of time can greatly benefit many lives whether serving at various food drives, and outreach programs, or simply holding babies for weary mothers. By serving in high school and college student government as the secretary treasurer, I further strengthened my beliefs on the importance of higher level education and leadership. After high school, I attended a ministry leadership academy for a year that developed strong leaders with the mission of promoting honor, integrity, and accountability. The leadership training began cultivating my character with a core foundational principle of following high-moral standards. As a six year old, my passion for the community and making the world a better place did not necessarily change but evolved into something bigger. Through my mission’s outwork opportunities and leadership roles, I am applying the information learned to focusing in my community.
Leading people is not about handing out rules or giving orders. Natural leadership is about others wanting to follow you because they can see the influence and effect on the lives you make around them. This, is the reason for why people view nursing through “rose-colored glasses”. Amongst the adversities surrounding nurses they persevere even through the most difficult circumstances.
Great nurses make the situations around them appear conquerable and can turn a bad circumstance around into a positive one. The defined qualities of education, servanthood, and leadership is what makes a great nurse and I continued to display this qualities even as a six-year old. These qualities can be seen through my academic achievements. I have displayed an emphasis on education and the importance to continually progress. In my volunteer work, my servant heart shows the value I place in giving to my community. Though my own personal leadership training, my efforts to develop future leaders, my emphasis on the value of teamwork, and unspoken inquisitive fascination of the human anatomy makes the study of nursing an inherent choice for my career. In essence, my commitment to community, compassionate leadership, constant pursuit of education and natural strengths is the foundation for why I believe in nursing and why I want to be a nurse.
