Notes from a Note Taker by Chase - January 2014 Scholarship Essay
My notes, were wild. Instead of note taking, I use to write meaningless sentences that were sure to go directly into the garbage. Sometimes I still have flashbacks to the mess of paper I use to create. I close my eyes, take a deep breath in, and out, because that was then and now the terror is finally over. I take my notes seriously now and because of it, I have made it through. If it were not for this skill of note taking there is a good chance that I could be sitting in the back of a high school classroom today, no teachers to blame, and no apples to buy my way out of there. Just me, my pencil, and another lonely day. Thankfully because of my notes I have graduated and now as my duty I pass the skill to my fellow students.
Lets take a look at the word note. The first part clearly spells not. This is useful in our breakdown of the word to provide and remember clear instructions as follows. Number one, do NOT forget your notes. Do not forget to write them, use them, take them, bring them, and study them. Number two do NOT be unorganized. I want your notes to look like each one an individual soldier marching towards the enemy of the test or quiz! Finally number three, do NOT forget to use your bullets, numbers, roman numerals, dates, titles, highlighters, etc...to define and clarify the who, what, when, where, and why that your teacher was trying to talk about when you were half asleep.
In summary, I would like to thank all those teachers who told me I was doing it wrong. They would say "Chase...there is a better way, there is help for your notes!" Although I did not believe instantly, I was sure to become a believer when I graduated successfully with an A, I knew I was destined to be friends with them forever. My notes and I have a long journey ahead of us and we better pack our things and be going now. One final note as we leave, number four do not forget the time that my notes traveled to you and attempted to save your educational career and you can thank them by returning the favor if you so kindly wish to do so, I can assure you it is in your best interest.
Sincerely.
