Education Made Me into Who I am Today by Chantel - June 2017 Scholarship Essay
When I was 6-years-old, I wanted to be a detective like Nancy Drew. I loved the fact that she found clues and pieced them together in order to find the culprit. I have always been one to love puzzles and figure out a solution. Being a detective or crime scene investigator was what I aspired to do for many years until I had the opportunity to learn more about it in school.
Nancy Drew inspired me to take a concurrent enrollment Criminal Justice class while in high school, and I am happy to say I took it before I went to college. The class was interesting, but it made me realize a detective is not what I want to be for the rest of my life. Nancy Drew and CSI made being a detective seem so much more exciting and daring. This Criminal Justice class made me realize it is very tedious and you have to deal with the law a lot more than I imagined.
The great thing about higher educational classes is that you can take an intro class to find out if it is a major you would like to study. Anyone should test the waters to find a major that could potentially help them get into a profession they would love for the rest of their lives. I took an intro class for Communication, and I knew I wanted to major in it because I loved to read, write, and public speak.
I am also thankful for internships. Throughout college and post-graduating, I interned at a few places to get hands on experience to determine if I would like that particular job. I interned with a local news station, a copy writing company, a hospital nutritionist, and a sports nutritionist. Because I interned with these companies/ people, my decision was easy to make for what Master’s program I would like to go into: Journalism.
I am so grateful that education has helped me decide what I want to do for the rest of my life, and it’s still not done helping me decide. I now know I want to go into Journalism, but furthering my education will help me decide if I will like the writing, broadcasting, or producing side of it. I will find out if I truly want to choose sports as my beat, or specialism. Education has helped me evolve into who I am today, and for that, I am thankful.
