Dream Career and Goals by Chantavis - July 2015 Scholarship Essay
We all have goals in life and my goal is to become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and be able to take care of my family when I become financially stable. To achieve my goal, I will go to college and major in Nursing. Since I was in middle school my dream career has been to become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. I love working with children and being able to help them anyway I can. My Grandmother looks after children and whenever I can help her out, I help. I understand that being a Nurse for children and "babysitting" are two totally different jobs and I also know how difficult children can be. But the love I have for children is all the same. A new generation is born every day and our population is constantly expanding. Without the Nurses and Doctors to take care of them how will they get better when they are sick? I want to be that person to help children when they are sick, or when they are not where they should be health wise. I remember when I went with my Grandfather to take my baby cousin to the doctor for her shots. I wanted to see how the Nurses interacted with the children and also to see how they did their job. During her check up the first thing the Nurse did was prick her finger to draw blood (I did not realize how much blood could come from someone’s finger). After her finger was pricked, she received three shots in the leg. The Nurse gave the shots so quick it seemed as if she was in shock because she did not cry immediately. Every Nurse has to be able to communicate well with the children and parents or guardians, and have a pleasant attitude. I know sometimes we all have our bad days and days when we do not want to be bothered, but we cannot let that effect the job at hand. At the end of the day, the children are the most important thing. In 8th grade I fractured my tibia. Every Doctor visit I had they made me feel good and special, not once was I uncomfortable. I want to be able to make the children I come encounter with to feel as special as I felt. Children are the future and they should taken care of as soon as they enter this world. Where would we be without nurses, doctors, and midwives? By receiving my degree in Nursing, I can finally become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and be hands on when I can helping children when I am at work.
When I begin classes at Clayton State in the fall in will be enrolled in 15 hours. All the classes I take will not be superfluous, everything I do in college will be a step helping my towards my dream career. I was scared when I first saw my schedule and I was doubting myself. I thought about dropping classes before the school year even started, but that would not be a good idea, I would still have to take the classes next semester. Plus college is about challenging yourself, and if I want to be a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner I will have to do things I am not use to, but in the end it will all be worth it. When I become financially stable, I will be able to take care of my family. They have always taken care of me, and one day I want to be able to make sure they have everything they need. A parent is expected to nurture their child and help them grow. When the child has grown and ventured out on their own they should want to come back and help their parents. Our parents broke their backs in order to give their children all they did not have growing up. Instead of being selfish and not doing anything, I want to help those who have helped me. Family is one of the most important things to me. No matter what happens in life, family will always be there to help when times get rough. Friends may leave but family is forever. By winning the Varsity Tutors College Scholarship Contest I will be one step closer to achieving my goals of becoming a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and being able to take care of my family.
