The Power of Counseling and Conversation. by Caytlin - June 2020 Scholarship Essay

I plan to become a Mental Health Counselor when I graduate from the University of Lynchburg. I do not think many people realize how important it is to receive counselling services. I know from personal experiences that it makes a person feel so much better once they talk about things that are bothering them. Some people may think that their small issues don’t matter and they just ignore them until they build up and get worse. Everyone should have someone they feel comfortable enough to talk to and get help with their issues such as emotional, family, and personal problems and stresses.
I hope to be able to work with people in and around my community and make them feel comfortable enough to come into my office and talk. I hope to let all of the world know how important it is to find a counselor and keep your mental health in check. I plan to help people feel comfortable needing and using a counselor. I want my patients to feel as healthy as they possibly can, especially with their mental health. I want to help change my clients lives by helping them see the issues, talk about and plan actions to take to help handle what they are going through. While working with my clients and other mental health counselors, we will be able to eliminate the stigma that surrounds the mental health field. I want this career to spread like a wildfire and for citizens to have options for counselors everywhere they look. I hope to do this by informing those around me and those around the world through social media and advertising. I hope to encourage my patients to be open and honest, to feel comfortable, and to encourage their friends to go to counselors as well.
