Why Not Cooking? by Casey - September 2019 Scholarship Essay
If you were to ask me what my all-time favorite activity is, my answer would be eating. Yes, I understand that in order for humans to survive, eating is a necessity; however, eating is something that I consider to be enjoyable. Growing up, one phrase that my mother frequently repeated was, “While I eat to live, Casey lives to eat.” Although I did not exactly appreciate her saying that in front of all of her friends, it was true, I love to eat. However, now that I am older and should not rely on my parents to prepare every meal, I realize that in order to eat, cooking is essential. However, that is not a problem for me. Along with eating, I also love to cook. Over time, I have recognized that I am not the only one that enjoys eating and cooking. Furthermore, that made me consider, why are cooking clubs not offered in schools as extracurricular activities?
I realize that certain people will assert that cooking is just something natural that you just perform every day or it is just a hobby. However, if it is in the form of a club, why should it not count as an extracurricular activity? Think, if photography, sewing, and gaming count, why is cooking not acceptable? Before you say anything, I recognize that there are cooking clubs that exist. However, those are for the children who love “helping” cooking dinner or are for the parents who are constantly searching for activities to enroll their kids in. However, why are cooking clubs considered childish and looked down upon when you become older? When I say that there should be a cooking club, I am talking regarding a cooking club for high school students.
I believe that cooking should become an extracurricular activity. Like I previously stated, eating is a necessity for all humans. Thus, not only will it be exciting, in addition to that, you will also gain skills that you can apply to your everyday life and ultimately your entire lifetime. Whether you hope to become a chef one day or you just love food, a club like this might be right up your ally. If I had the opportunity to create a high school extracurricular activity, I would create a cooking club.
