As You've All Heard, Determination is Key... by Casey - September 2014 Scholarship Essay

The one thing I believe is absolutely important for a person to succeed in college is determination. Determination is absolutely necessary for anyone journeying through college. Even if academics aren’t a strong suit for a person, if they’re determined enough to learn something, they will find a way to understand any concept thrown their way. The same idea applies to arriving to classes, even with the understanding of the fact that there will be no consequences from ditching (other than missing material given by the professors), and striving to do their best.

If a person lacks a strong sense of determination, I believe they will not do as well as someone who does not. Determination is what can keep a person from giving in when it’s all too easy to quit, take a break, or stop giving school the attention that is required. It is what can make the difference between an average student and an excellent student.

Personally, I believe every person has some measure of determination if they’re even applying for colleges. It is how much determination and what they are determined to do that will segregate each student into an average or excellent student. The determination must also be very consistent. Short burst of determination followed by slacking will get a student nowhere.
