Purpose & the Pursuit of a Dream by Casey - August 2014 Scholarship Essay
Benjamin Franklin supposedly once said, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.” I can attest to this statement when it comes to having purpose and goals in life that one may want to achieve. I am the first in my family to attend college; I had little guidance and was unprepared for what would lie ahead my first year of college.
Coming in to college I thought I knew what I wanted to do but apparently I was wrong. At first my educational goal was to pursue engineering, but I realized that engineering was not my passion. Unfortunately it took for me to fail to realize this. I could never really imagine myself as an engineer, and it showed in my coursework. Because I was unsure of my future, I did not really apply myself in my engineering coursework causing me to fail my first semester with a 2.0 GPA. This was not good for me, considering that I come from a low-income family my education is heavily dependent on my financial aid and most of my scholarships required that I maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Some changes definitely needed to be made next semester.
After failing my first semester and realizing that engineering was not my passion, I decided to change my major to business. I have always been told that I am a natural born leader, so why not pursue a career where I can utilize my leadership skills? After failing my first semester, I was determined not to fail again and I am proud to say that I managed to pass all my classes making my cumulative GPA for my first year a 3.19.
By realizing and knowing what I want to achieve in life, it gives me purpose. By having clear, set goals I have something to works towards. Realizing my purpose gave me drive and made me more determined to achieve my goals by all means. Before then, I was just going through the motions of going to class and studying without a clear reason. Now I am dedicated and more passionate about my education because it lays the foundation of what I want to achieve in life. Education is the key to my success; it creates an opportunity for me to pursue the life that most of my family hoped for but were not able to attain.
Currently I am pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Management in hopes to one day become the CEO of my own talent management firm. I plan to create a legacy in the entertainment industry. But until I am able to achieve my dream, I plan to start small. I will continue to study hard so I can succeed in college and obtain my degree. Upon obtaining my degree and graduating from college I hope to move to Atlanta, Georgia and work for a talent management firm. Then once I am stable, I will begin working to get my firm started. I know that the road to achieving my dream will not be an easy one but I am determined to achieve my goals despite any obstacles that may arise. I must fulfill my purpose in life by being successful.
