The Amberjack Organization by Carr - February 2020 Scholarship Essay

According to Unwavering Champions for children and families the average age of the children in foster care is 8 years old. There are over 400,000 children in foster care in the United States Only 25% of children in foster care get adopted each year. 30% of children in foster care are over the age 13. If I were to start a non profit organization it would be to help those children.

Each year, approximately 20,000 youth will age out of the foster care system when they turn 18 or 21.Less than three percent of teenagers who age out of foster care end up in secondary school. I want to start an organization that would help them to have better options earlier on by providing support and helping them to do well in school. My organization would also help the adults who did age out of foster care without a proper education by helping them pursue other career options.

I would also like this to be a space for victims of abuse. In 2014, there were 496,972 reports of neglect and child abuse in the State of California. This non-profit would be a safe place for those victims to get away from their abusers. In a similar way it can be a place for victims of any kind of abuse to come and get away from their abusers. 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men experience severe intimate partner physical violence. I would like to help those people get away from their partners as soon as possible.

To conclude if I were to start a non-profit organization it would help foster children and abuse victims to live as good a life as they can. I would help them get out of their current situations. This organization could help to save lives as most victims of domestic abuse end up dying at their partner's hand.
