the reflection of a strong woman by Carmen - October 2019 Scholarship Essay
My success and inspiration are all because of my mother. From a young age, she did things to inspire me, to make me who I am today she reflected herself on me in many ways.
From the beginning of my memories, I remember seeing her push through hardships. She didn't let my father's death pull her down. Therefore, the work she put into raising four girls by herself without ever leaving us hungry, without clothes or a roof above our heads made me the strong woman I am. Making push myself without the need of others to do the best at school. Never did I need a teacher to make me get good grades or have them look over me. The way my mother presented her self made me be like her academically.
My mother saw how good I was doing in school and never said anything besides “keep doing a good job because no one will do it for you.” That's all I needed from her, I didn't need her to repay me with presents and rewards or punishments because just seeing her keep pushing and not giving up was enough for me. Never did I experience my phone taken away because of a low grade, never did I received ice cream after class because of a perfect score. All I ever needed was for my mother to keep being the powerful woman she is.
When I get asked what pushes me to do better, what makes you better and inspires you? I respond with my mother, although she never graduated high school she keeps inspiring me to finish school and go to college because if she could I can too.
