The Fault in our stars by John Green recommended by me by Carlos - February 2015 Scholarship Essay

The Fault in our Stars by John Green is truly an inspirational book. It makes you feel grateful about having all the great things you have. It truly breaks my heart every time I read it. So why would I recommend it? The reason why is because right now teenagers are focusing on things they don’t have. So this book is a reality of how the world works. You don’t always get what you want and that’s the pure bliss of life.

The book opened my eyes to the idea of true love. It made me sad but it is beautifully written and it made me grateful that I read it. John Green really worked hard for this book and you can tell by the characters and the famous quotes. A quote that really stuck out to me was “ That’s the thing about pain. It Demands to be felt” (Augustus Waters, The Fault in our Stars). This quote is very powerful and sad. It not only captivates me but also says the truth. The Character Augustus faces a lot of pain through the story. It makes the reader realize that pain is just part of being human.

The moments that we have on this earth our precious and they can be bad or good. Some of us teenagers think that we are invincible. We’re not. It’s sad to say it but it’s the painful truth. However the great times we have in this earth are the ones that will last a lifetime. “ I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, then all at once.” (Hazel Grace Lancaster, The Fault in our Stars). It’s a great metaphor and a great example of who Hazel is. She truly is an amazing character and I’m one hundred percent sure that everyone who read the book loved her. She changes my view of how to be independent and how to keep on fighting, for what I thought was right.

The two lovers Hazel and Augustus were great characters. There was a movie about this book and it did not make me as emotional as the book. The book will always be better than the movie but this movie did not justify the book. Augustus said a quote that will always mean something to a lot of people. “ The marks humans leave are too often scars.”(Augustus Waters, The Fault in our Stars). This inflects an emotional statement to how love really is. It is sad but it is worth the pain.

John Green wrote a fantastic book. It surely led an example of how love is bitter sweet. His characters Hazel and Augustus will surely live forever. All teenagers should read this book. I know that mostly all of them will enjoy this love story.
