Glazed Donuts by Carla - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Now, let's be honest with one another. Each and every single one of us knows that when you are in college, having leadership skills are not really all that necessary. When you go into a classroom have you ever just looked around a little? Seen that blank stare on a person's face, almost like nothing is going on? Yeah, that dead fish-eyed gaze off into the distance. At the end of the day, that person will be getting the same exact degree as the one who is completely alert and paying attention. Striving to do their best and getting it done to be the number one student in that class. There won't be a hint of difference listed in that degree they're both going for.

However, there will be a difference later on. You see Mr. (or Miss.) Number One success who has been demonstrating his/her leadership skills and honing them in will be off making their way to a successful and ever evolving life. Getting along just fine with their neighbors and keep pushing themselves and others to doing the best that they can. While over in our other corner you've got that kid with the glazed over expression. The one that always followed the herd never looking to lead or bring forth new ideas. That will be the one who you will find stuck in their cubicle for the next forty years, only to receive a paycheck a month and a going away party at the end of their career - only to be forgotten about the next month by the new drones as by that time all of his co-workers have either retired, quit, or been let go.

So, as I've said before. You can get on just by in college without a single lick of leadership skills, heck you could even go through life without any of them. If you are asking me if you can live a successful life where you are constantly improving and challenging yourself, well I'd just have to say good luck to you and I wish you the best. To truly live life you are going to need to take risks. Big ones, small ones, any size in order for you to improve and keep evolving. Making the decision on what risk to take does take a good bit of leadership in order to carve out your own path, which in the end we hope is the path to fulfillment and success.
