A Subject for All by Cari - August 2015 Scholarship Essay

In my experience as a high school student, subjects in school are very important. They can expose students to subjects that they may be interested in pursuing. However, when I come home and see my mother doing taxes and paying bills, I am at a loss. I have not the faintest idea of how to preform such important tasks, and I believe that is a problem. A subject that should be added to the American high school curriculum is one that teaches students how to manage bills, taxes, bank accounts, and other at home functions.

Some may say that teaching a student these things is the student's parent's job. If a student is orphaned, this perspective will not work. Also, most parents are too busy with work or other necessities to make time to teach their children the intricacies of at home tasks.

Teaching these at home functions would benefit every student who takes the class. They would understand how to preform these functions before leaving their homes for college or a home of their own. The students would then know what to do and how to do it. They would run their households smartly and efficiently, with little to no questions. They would have the knowledge that would enable them to know what to do with their money.

Also, having a course with taxes and bills may spark an interest in accounting or financial occupations. Students may see what these tasks include and find that they enjoy preforming them. At home functions would, therefore, be a course that I would add to the American high school curriculum.
