Getting Out What You Put In by Cara - May 2014 Scholarship Essay
College is not for everyone. Education comes in many different forms from apprenticeships to college classes. I chose the college route and the best piece of educational advice I received taught me that what I do beyond the assignments matters just as much as the grades for those assignments. Time and effort put into networking and gaining real world experience are paramount; this will set me apart from so many others who also have a college degree.
I have had the opportunity to witness the truth in this statement. As I return to college classes after a hiatus, I have seen how former classmates have gone on to work together and provide opportunities for each other. Networking with classmates, professors, and advisors can open up doors. Participating in extracurricular activities such as clubs or internships provides opportunity to get to know classmates and professors; it also provides an opportunity for them to get to know you. Often making an impression while working towards the goal of a college degree can propel you further than the degree alone.
This advice has helped me to become more active in my field while taking classes. I view my classes and assignments as opportunities to make an impression instead of viewing them in terms of grades on my transcript. Being cognizant of how hard work can pay off, and how my interactions with people are just as important as the assignments I turn in, has changed my outlook on how far my education can take me.
