My most effective study methods and how it has helped me by Candace - January 2014 Scholarship Essay
The struggle to make good grades, long hours on school work, and the crying when you don’t get the grade you want; these are all things I struggled with throughout my school carrier. From my perspective I have seen many other students go through the same hurdles. The best thing about struggling is that eventually I figured out the habits that will get the most reward from my education.
The most effective study habit, I have found is to do the more challenging work after classes. Doing so allows me to retain the information for longer periods. This also relieves stress later on in the day when I have things to do. The two factors that aid in this practice are choosing the perfect environment for learning and creating your own study aids (such as flash cards).
There were several environmental factor that go into the practice like background noise, smells, and place. The best place for me was at the library it had enough background noise that I could focus to do the work. When I did listen to music it was generally piano it did not have words that could get into my work. Even smells can be effective because they let me get into a calming mood to get motivated to do the work.
The making of study aids before a test that happens most often these aid enable me to retain the information I am reviewing. The best thing about these aids is that they are portable which means I can study anywhere. Therefore when a test came up I remembered the keywords to that question from the aids.
In brief the habit of doing my most challenging homework after class lead to practices such as choosing the right environment and making my own study aids (such as flash cards).
