Two for The Price of One by Cameron - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

Once the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve the world will ring in the start of a fresh year. A popular tradition to start a New Year is to create New Year's resolutions. This is where a change will take place that did not occur in the previous year. This year, 2016, is a big year for me as I am a senior and will graduate from high school. Then I will move on to the next chapter of my life and start my college career. A New Year's resolution that will help me be a better student this year is to reduce how much I stress.

Stress can consume the mind like a wildfire and as a student this is not enjoyable. Between everyday life, family, health problems, extracurricular activities, and school work I get caught up in a whirlwind of tasks to keep up with. With so much going on in my life I have high standards and only want to put forth my best effort. But this causes me to become a perfectionist to the point to where I focus too much on the smallest details. But when I do this in school I get too tense in my school work and end up making the mistakes that I know I should not make. Stress is effecting my school work and if I can reduce it I can perform better. But I can also become a better student by reducing my stress with a relaxing activity like reading.

A positive way to not consume myself in stress is to start to reading more. Reading is a silent activity where I can sit in an isolated area and get wrapped up in a book. I will be able to escape the worries of the world and all of the tasks put on my shoulders daily. But at the same time a book will further my vocabulary and English skills which will help me in school. So as I help to get stress out of my life I will also be widening my knowledge of the English language.

As the new year starts so does a new student in myself because I will work harder than last year to accomplish my very best. I looked pasted the popular New Year's resolution of exercising more and decided to become a better student by reducing how much I stress. Stress is something that just ate away at me and it caused me to slowly degrade myself as a student. But in 2016 I will read more in a way to relax and get my mind off the many worries of my everyday life. This is a double positive as reading will give me a gain in vocabulary and English skills for school. When making a New Year's resolution try to fix something that may benefit more than one aspect of life.
