Right Yet Also a Privilege by Cameron - January 2021 Scholarship Essay

Education is essential if one wants to thrive. If education is essential, is it a right that all should have access to, or is it a privilege that not all have. Education, in the world we live in, is both a right and a privilege.
Education is a protected right that everyone has. Without education, one cannot access their other rights. They access them through learning about them. One cannot access their rights if they do not know what is a right that they have. It also allows for them to make the most of their lives. Education teaches all individuals essential life skills that are needed to live one’s life to the fullest. Though some would say they do not learn any life skills in school, they do. They learn essential problem solving skills along with skills that are used around the workplace. Without education, there will not be a prosperous economy. Though many people access their right to education, why do some not access this right?
Even though education is a right, some have greater access to it then others. Not everyone has the same changes in life. Different people are better at different things. When seeking higher education, it is like competing. Everyone comes from different backgrounds, but wants the same spot, though there are not enough spots for everyone. Some people, based on how they portray themselves, will have a leg up on the competition and will have a higher chance at getting one of the limited spots. If education were purely a right, then everyone would be competing on a level playing ground. No one would end up being financially burdened more than others. But in the real world, it is a privilege to seek out higher education. It is a privilege to not only get into the school you want, but graduate from there too.
Yes everyone has the right to learn, but it is also a privilege to have the resources and the support for further in education. When looking at the small details, one could go either way; a right or a privilege. But when the big picture is looked at, education is a mixture of both. A right is some places, but a privilege in others. Education, a right for all, yet still only few access its full potential.
