Want Vs. Need by Cameron - May 2014 Scholarship Essay
Do what you have to now, so you can do what you want to later! That phrase was told to me from my uncle Chip Brown. He said those where the words his father told him when he was growing up. He said he never really understood him until a couple years after college. My uncle was an engineering major in college, but he was also the party guy. He had this problem of doing what he wanted to do instead of what needed to be done, which I am sure at some point we all do. He ended up changing his major to teaching, because he did not like the work load. He also decided to no longer pursue his Master’s degree because he wanted to be done with school, start a family and his career.
Uncle Chip said his regret was not doing what he needed to do back then, because he would have had his dream job and a higher paying salary, which would have made his life easier. Uncle Chip said I am just like him when he was in college and does not wish for me to have the same regret. His words have stuck with me ever since the day he told me. Now every time when I get ready to skip class or not do my work for some social gathering or simply because I feel overwhelmed his words play in my head like a tape recorded over and over again. This has helped me overcome my desire to fulfill my wants and instead do what I need to be done. I will pass those words down to my children, nephews, nieces and their children, not because I want to, but because that is what is needed to be done.
