Leadership In This Stage of Life by Caleb - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
I will never doubt the power and essentiality of leadership skills, when it comes to one's success in college, again. In high school, and throughout my life, I was told that I was a leader among my peers. I never really knew what those words meant, but they were presented to me with a positive connotation, causing me to feel pretty good about myself. Walking into my first year at college, I wasn't sure what it would look like to be a leader, or if I could even act as a leader among the many people I did not know.
I definitely started my freshman year as a follower. I felt much less comfortable than I had in high school. As a result of that, I didn't feel comfortable voicing my opinion on issues as much, or acting as a leader in any way. I felt that I didn't need to be that, even though I saw it as a good thing, A couple weeks into school I began to feel very lost and abnormal. I felt like I wasn't being myself and that was not satisfying for me. In considering why I felt the way I did, I realized that I wasn't acting in the way that came natural for me, or the way I felt convicted to act. I realized that I needed to act in the way that I am compelled and convicted to act in. That would be the only way I would feel totally satisfied.
I ended up changing the way I was living and acting, and began becoming more of a leader at my school and among my peers. This not only made my life feel more fulfilling, but it also brought about opportunities that were essential for growing me into the person I am today. I believe that without displaying some sort of leadership in life, one will not feel fully satisfied or experience all that could help shape and grow them into a better person. I believe that everyone has some sort of conviction in their life that involves being a leader. College is a part of life, so it should not be treated any differently than any other part of life. One should act on his convictions no matter where he is. Realizing this has allowed me to life a different form of life at my current college. It has also brought about opportunities for me to be more involved in school, and that has brought about much more situations to act as a leader in my life which have fulfilled my life much more. I cannot over-stress the importance of leadership skills, not only in college, but in life in general. With college being such a large and formative time of life, I will never doubt its essentiality again.
