Keeping An Open Mind by Caleb - March 2020 Scholarship Essay

In the past, this was the question that basically every single child was asked: "What do you want to be when you grow up?" And now, as upperclassmen in high school, the reality of this question can catch students by surprise. I like to think I can answer this question with 100% confidence. However, as any adult will tell you, always be prepared for anything.

If my future was completely up to me, I'd end up attending Concordia University Nebraska and hopefully be the pastor of my own church somewhere, leading the music and worship aspects to their fullest potential. Music has always had a huge influence in my life, and I can never imagine letting go of it. I've always seen my future self fully immersed in music, both career-wise and as a hobby, both directing and performing, so being the music leader at my own church would just be the cherry on top. Overall, this plan will take at least 8 years to complete college and vocational seminary, so within 10 years, I'll still be a "newbie" in my career field. But I won't let that stop me.

Of course, that was all a hypothetical. No one can be certain of what their future holds. I like to keep my mind open to anything that could come my way regarding my future because I know that anything is possible. Maybe the pastoral ministry just isn't for me, and I end up focusing 100% on music. Maybe I lose my ability to sing and have to switch my plans completely. Whatever may happen, I know that I am strong enough to overcome any obstacle and make my way in thus ever-changing world.
