Everybody Can Inc. by Bryson - February 2020 Scholarship Essay

My nonprofit would be an art program for kids with special needs because of the challenges that I’ve experienced growing up. The name of my organization would be Everybody Can Inc. I represent all the special need kids who struggle in school. I am the kid that has been isolated, bulled and teased for being different. Drawing and painting has given me an opportunity to feel normal both inside and outside of the classroom. It’s a skill that I can do independently without public embarrassment or judgement. Art is the one of the few times when I feel accepted, appreciated and not looked over. I would like to give this opportunity to others.
My career goals are to become a graphic designer and manage my own organization or art school where I can train disabled kids in this field so they can become employed. One defining moment in my life that helped shape my future was when I sketched and then customized my first Nike I.D shoe in elementary school. I knew at that moment that I wanted to become a fashion designer, specifically in the field of graphic design. I spent hours designing shoes online that my mom couldn’t afford, but I enjoyed it so much I just did it for the fun of it. Having some cerebral palsy from birth always made drawing on paper difficult for me but using graphing software has allowed me to become very talented in graphic design over the years. I have taken several entry and advance level classes in graphic design and I’m currently working on my certification. I want an opportunity to show other kids with disabilities that art is an amazing place for us to explore our feelings and at the same time make a great wage.
For three years, I have been a member of the YMCA Youth Achievers which is a college bound program. In 2018, I competed in a competition where I designed a logo t-shirt for the college tour and won. My design was selected out of all the kids in the YMCA Milwaukee locations. Over 100 kids wore my design as they toured 9 colleges last year. In 2017, I competed in a different competition against YMCA members in Southeastern Wisconsin and won a scholarship to cover my cost for the annual college tour from a local company called POISE. I created a video on why I want to go to college. Here is the link. I’m sharing this because I am passionate about my goals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCfuw9r2P-E.
