The Storm Will Pass by Brittney - February 2014 Scholarship Essay
“Be strong now because things will get better. It may be stormy now but it can’t rain forever.”–Unknown
This quote helped me through depression. When you’re depressed, it seems as if things will never get better. That’s why many depressed people commit suicide. They see themselves being depressed forever and they just want a way out. This quote helped remind me that even though it seemed like things would be bad forever, things had to get better eventually. It literally cannot rain forever. That’s physically impossible, the sun has to come out at some point. And that’s what this quote is really about. Things can’t be bad forever. It may take a while, but the sun will come out.
It made me think about the future. If I didn’t push through the storm I wouldn’t get to go to college, get married or have kids. Just like rain is necessary for the earth to prosper, sadness is necessary for humans to prosper. Conquering depression really changes the way you see life. Before, something like failing a quiz may have seemed like the end of the world. But after beating depression, failing a quiz is such a small issue. If you can beat depression, you can handle a failed quiz. You can handle anything!
Thanks to this quote and help from my family and doctors, I finally beat depression after two years. I truly don’t think I could have done it without this quote to remind me to keep hanging in there and to wait for the sun. Two years later and it has finally stopped raining. The storm has passed and the sun is shining bright.
