College success through my eyes by Brittany - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Many students go to college with a goal of graduating at the end of their four year tenure and starting a career for themselves based on what they know and the influence they can have on individuals, groups, and organizations. College is viewed as the stepping stone to careers in which students will become leaders. This leadership can be found in the classroom, hospital, service organization, or in their own business. This alone, along with the fact that every college graduate at some point in their life will be supervising someone, demonstrates the importance of being a leader in order to become successful in college.

In college, leadership skills become essential to your day to day life. Nothing is handed to you, if you want something, you have to work at acquiring it yourself. This fact proves that one of the necessary qualities a leader must have is the ability to communicate well, not only with his peers and professors but everyone he/she may encounter with. Often in classes, professors normally has students work in groups to complete an assignment. In doing so, the professor is observing the student(s) that takes charge of the group, telling them what to do by dividing the work amongst everyone and not simply telling them how to do things. The professor is looking to see the “leader” in the group unite everyone together to cooperate and inspire each other in the process.

“Success is not counted by how high you have climbed but by how many people you brought with you.” This quote by Dr. Wil Rose, in layman’s term is saying that; when one becomes a leader, the success is all about growing others. There are many factors that come into play when thinking of college success such as intelligence, diligence, time management, etc. but the one factor that stands out as one of the most important goals of a college education is leadership skills.
