My Evolution by Brittany - June 2017 Scholarship Essay
When I was six years old, I wanted to be a ballerina. I took dance lessons, and I wore my pink, fluffy tutu everywhere that I went. I always dreamed of becoming famous one day. A few years later, however, I got enrolled into my school's band program. I instantly realized that I had a passion for music, so I then wanted to be a famous musician. I worked hard at learning clarinet and piano, and became first chair in my school's marching band. I still have a passion for music, but in seventh grade, I changed my mind yet again about my future career choice. I joined a writing club called Power of the Pen, and I fell in love with writing. I had always loved writing, but this club had motivated me to explore my passion and challenged me to try new techniques. I decided right then that I wanted to be a journalist and work for New York Times. I entered several writing competitions and made it to states, and I also got a few of my poems published. For years, I was convinced that I wanted to be a journalist. I even enjoyed writing essays for school! It wasn’t until around the middle of my freshmen year that I finally discovered what I wanted to study in college and what I wanted to do with my life.
My freshmen year was when I visited New York City for the first time when I was on a trip with my school’s marching band. I remember walking into Times Square for the first time, and everywhere I turned there were flashing billboards and signs advertising for things such as an amazing shoe sale or a great family deal at McDonald’s. It then occurred to me how much of an impact could be made if even a small fraction of those advertisements were for addressing local and national issues. It is now my goal to start a non-profit marketing firm that is known for their campaigns that address issues such as these, and hopefully inspire people to help and make a difference in the world. Several classes that I have had have confirmed my love of business, as well. In my AP English class, I was given an assignment to come up with some type of public service announcement that's purpose was to address an issue in the world. I chose to make a short video that could be played as an advertisement on YouTube. It was about how today’s society needs to end gender stereotyping, and it ended up being very successful at my school. I also took an economics class, and was introduced to another side of the business world, which I also loved. Learning about the stock market and how to handle different financial crises really interested me. After discovering my love of business, I enrolled in the Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University, and plan to specialize in marketing and management, with knowledge in all areas of the business world.
