Beethoven Brings "Odes of Joy" to My Test Scores by Brittany - January 2014 Scholarship Essay

Cramming information into my brain using numerous pneumonic devices or any little trick that will trigger my memory is what I used to depend on for tests. Sure, who doesn't still do that on a regular basis but I have found that lately I don't have to because of my new friend, Ludwig van Beethoven.

They say classical music is the gateway into a developed brain for babies and younger children, but what about the older children? I, along with a bunch of other students, have found it very relaxing and an easy way to get my brain in order. Not only does it relax me, I have found myself shoving words into the lyric-lacking songs to help remember definitions or equations. The catchy tunes stick to my memory and so does some of the information I need to memorize.

This music also is easy to listen to when reading. Sometimes I just want to read but I can’t focus for all of the noise around me and when I listen to music with lyrics, I can’t concentrate. Classical music offers an alternative to block out the sound and helps me focus on what I am reading rather than what I am listening to.
Beethoven may have died almost 200 years ago yet his music still lives on to entertain people for ballroom dances, dinner parties, weddings, and studying sessions.
