Lessons and Improvement Through Failure by Briannah - February 2017 Scholarship Essay

A few days ago I felt that my life was coming to an end due to family and friend issues. I had just lost a family member, my cousin was taken to a mental hospital and I had figuratively lost my best friend. I became so depressed becuase I believed that all these things we my fault and that I failed to prevent such issues. The only thing I felt was guilt from failure; failure of making my family and friends happy before things ended the way they did. For the following days I began to experience depressions symptoms: hopelessness, loss of interest, sadness, loss of appetite, restless sleep (the list goes on and on). I excluded myself from anyone and everyone, those who tried to cheer me up only made it worse. However, depression has always been a natural solution my mind turns to. I knew that shame wouldn't get me anywhere but I didn't know how to stop feeling failure. I began carrying on with life and decided that the only solution was God. If I prayed to God every night and put my faith in him, l he would help me turn my life around. During the time of my family members funeral I spent so much time with my family ,especially with the cousin who was in the mental hospital. Also during this time I realized that I already had the friends I needed to keep me happy and that I started to become aware if my capabilites. I looked at myself in the mirror for the first time ever and said "I am intelligent, independent and determined!", "I will be successful becuase all I need is my family, my real friends and myself ." As long as my family and friends are happy and healthy, no matter where they are, I am successful. The lesson learned is that life will go on; when you fail, you'll realize your capabilities and God will always help you find joy. My loved ones became closer, I made real friendship and most importantly, I appreciated myself...
The one motto I've stuck with through the continuation of my life is that God makes life fair: when something really good happens, something bad will happen, and when something really bad happens, something good will happen.
