A Recipe For Success by Brianna - February 2015 Scholarship Essay

Students in high school would greatly benefit from reading Dr. C. Moorer, From Failure to Promise: An Uncommon Path to Professoriate. Youth today who are pondering their future endeavors will find many paths in Moorer’s book that will help them plan their future. The book offers a great depth of knowledge which is truly inspirational. It provides a recipe for getting closer to God and opens the way for others to proceed successfully as a college bound student. Students reading this book will be able to complete things on their own and learn how to deal with peer pressure. The passages in the book will inspire and provide knowledge about how go forward in their future endeavors.

Following the recipe outlined in the book will allow students in high school the ability to learn from someone who has experienced life with God at the helm of his ship. The knowledge they will gain from the pages of the book will inspire them to let God redirect and restore their faith in their ability to achieve their promises. As they relate back to the passages and Moorer’s description about the wilderness, they will understand how the streets are their wilderness, which has nothing to offer them and that God is only using this wilderness to bring them to their own future promises. They will learn that in order to enjoy the sweetness of God’s sunshine, they must endure the bitterness of the wilderness. In fact, Dr. Moorer makes it clear for the reader, if they want something in life that it is best to wait on the wonders of God, just as the people of Egypt waited to be delivered from the bondage of slavery. Even though a high school student may have allowed many entities of their life to hold them hostage, the insight provided in the book will offer hope and courage to those who read, From Failure to Promise: An Uncommon Path to Professoriate. It will allow them to strive for dreams they have dreamt about, thus allowing them to free themselves from the chains that hold them captive; which has the possibility to stop their success.

As a matter of fact, From Failure to Promise: An Uncommon Path to Professoriate will give the student many aspects on how to become a better person. Becoming one who is willing to receive the blessings God has in store for him or her. According to Moorer, learning about the importance of being obedient and accepting His will is the only way they will be able to attain their future promises of success. Like the high school student, and before I read Dr. Moorer’s book, I was at a standstill in my life, because I had not learned to put God first in everything in my life. Despite the prodding from my mother to follow the Lord, I too believed I could do this alone. I believed I could conquer life without the help of God or anyone else. But reading Moorer’s book made me realize, I have not even made a scratch on the surface for what life has in store for me.

In fact, since reading Moorer’s book I can relate to the conflict Moorer outlines about his failures while attending GMI. As a junior high student bound for one of the prestigious schools in my community, I quickly learned just ill-prepared I was for the curriculum at the high school. Struggling to maintain the much needed GPA to remain at Cass, I became withdrawn and desolate. I did not want to be a failure in the eyes of my mother, but after reading Dr. Moorer’s book, I realized that failure is just a stepping stone for rethinking why failure happens. Students reading these passages will learn that failure happens to most of us and they will be able to lift themselves up after reading Moorer’s book.

Consequently, students reading Moorer’s book will be impacted by the vivid words that seem to provide a wealth of knowledge and the tools necessary for pursuing success. They will decide that they need help and be more receptive to the help. I learned worrying while praying was only cancelling the answers I sought from God because I lacked faith. But as I read the scriptures in the book, I found myself growing stronger in the word and faith began to manifest itself in ways I have never experienced. Relating my life to Dr. Moorer’s has given me one of the greatest patterns I could partake. I also learned from the scriptures in the book, it is not the clothing that makes the person, but what is inside the soul or if I have what it takes, to let go and let God. In addition, I learned that it is important whom you select to be in your circle and the importance of surrounding yourself with others who are seeking God’s guidance if you want to receive what He has in store for you.

Therefore students who are given the opportunity to read From Failure to Promise: An Uncommon Path to Professoriate will learn to surround themselves with others who are seeking to be successful. So I believe every high school student would benefit from reading this book.
