People You'll Meet in High School by Brianna - November 2014 Scholarship Essay
When I was an incoming freshman I wasn't given much advice, I was thrown into the shark tank with little knowledge. My first couple days were spent stumbling around the hallways trying to remember if I had third period next or if fifth period is where I should have been. The seniors were almost never any help, and most of the teachers simply pointed down the hall with a shrug when I asked for help. I wasn't sure if I ever had to time to stop to my locker, so I never did. Being a freshman is frightening and very nerve wracking; you're not sure what to expect. It new, it's nothing like middle school, and its much harder. There are all sorts of people you'll meet in High School. Here's some advice on who you will meet in school.
You will make friends with all sorts of people when you enter High School. Some will be friends for only a year, some all of High School, and then there's the friends that last a lifetime. All of the upperclassmen have already formed their cliques, depending on what they do outside of school. The students who are in sports are normally always together, thought a few of the sports separate themselves from the other sports teams. Those students are great competitors and are great at working in a team, though, some of them don't care about school as much as sports. They are willing to make new friends, but they are more willing if you play a sport.
The next group you'll meet are the future potential valedictorian. They are very friendly, and most of them are at the top of their class. This group does not discriminate by age, like some of the other cliques, but they sometimes can be very judgmental when it comes to how well you are in academic classes. They make great study partners, but they can get frustrated if you don't understand what they are trying to explain. They normally are in the National Honors Society and volunteer regularly somewhere. Some of them play sports, but most of them participate in extra-curricular activities such as Mock Trial. They most likely will be given some sort of scholarship to their dream schools. They are someone you should model you're work ethic after.
The final major clique in High School are the students who don't care at all. They mainly sit in the furthest desk from the front of the classroom and sleep. They act like they are paying attention but in reality they are listening to music on their phones. Some of them do drugs and are very open about the fact and are even proud of it. Most of them just don't have the motivation to write six page papers and to learn about the Pythagorean Theorem. They are usually the smartest people you will meet, but they don't care about anything school related. Its better if you don't model your work ethic after them.
There are many more groups of students in school than just those three groups. The "Gamers" are students who mainly sit in lunch and play on a Nintendo 3DS instead of eating their lunch. They almost always know everything about any game you ask them. Many of them enjoy Legend of Zelda or Pokemon more than any of the first person shooter games. They are great friends, and will always show you how to play new games if you are willing to learn. There are the students who love horses, and show them every year in the fair. They are extremely nice and love to talk about animals of all kind. All of these groups make great friends, and hopefully you can find the group you fit into the best. Don't be afraid to try out every group to see where you fit the best. Maybe you're even a little bit of everything! Don't be afraid to make friends with every person you meet in High School. High School is supposed to be the best four years of your life, so make as many different kinds of friends as you can. Good Luck!
