My Favorite Teacher by Briana - July 2014 Scholarship Essay

A teacher is one of the most important people in a child’s life. A teacher doesn’t just educate and share their knowledge and wisdom, but acts as a parent figure to help inspire and motivate a student individually and academically. Yes, in life you are going to have to learn a lot by yourself and through experiences, but a teacher is there to offer you a hand. A teacher gives you faith, inspires the creative mind and implants a love for learning and Mr. Lapp, my history and SUPA sociology teacher, did executed this with perfection.

I didn’t like my high school that much and it was very hard to find a teacher you can connect with, but that changed when I met Mr. Lapp. I was so happy that I had him twice as a teacher throughout my high school years because he has so many qualities that are admirable. He has a passion for teaching and is so empathetic, in which he loves helping kids, academically and emotionally. He is so enthusiastic and engaging with every class he teaches; it’s so hard for anyone to hate him. His classes were so creative and organized that I got all my work done while enjoying it. I can go on and on about his qualities, but there are just so many admirable qualities about Mr. Lapp and that is why he is my favorite teacher.

The most important reason why I consider Mr. Lapp my favorite teacher is because he didn’t just send me home to do homework, he always sent me home with something to think about that would inspire you to do better. Every child should have an adult in their lives that cares about their education and if it isn’t your family, it usually is the teacher. Mr. Lapp truly cared about his student’s education. He pushed me to do my hardest and he didn’t accept anything less than my best from me. Mr. Lapp made me realize how important education is and if you want to be successful you need to push yourself, be confident and most importantly have a passion for what you are going to be doing.

While writing this essay, I realized the reason why Mr. Lapp pushed me so hard was because he knew I had a sociological mind and that I had the drive to be successful in the future. I can safely say Mr. Lapp is the reason why I am declaring my major as sociology in my incoming year at Syracuse University.
