If leadership wasn't important to the college education, why is prestige given to colleges that produce world leaders? by Brendan - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

I propose a very simple answer to this question; yes. College is about success which cannot be achieved alone. In order to have the success prescribed to you, you must be able to lead a group towards it. This is not to say that only the leadership of a group can win; but only those that inspire greatness in others can hope to find it in themselves. Consequently, the best way to measure success, especially in college, is by how you impact the people, the world, around you.

Leadership is about more than joining a club of high-achieving individuals. Contrary to popular belief, everyone can lead everyone. In some cases, leadership can mean taking initiative, demonstrating qualities, showing dedication, or anything else that requires more than the average. Consider a typical friend group in college. If these people want to be successful in college, they have to be able to lead, and to be led, themselves. One of them might lead the group in academic success. Another might encourage them to maintain morals, while another may encourage healthy living. All these people are going to succeed in college, despite their differences; all are being leaders.

MY conclusion is as follows- leadership is a founding pillar of the college institution. There is no better place to exercise and grow your leadership skills, and there is no better way to succeed without them. Leadership is not reserved for the ‘best’ in the room, but can be demonstrated and can benefit from all who are willing to exude it. Grades may be very important, but it cannot be denied that the real educational potential of the college atmosphere is the capacity for meeting new people, joining a productive society, and proving your ability to lead the world towards new horizons.
