Determination and Sucess in College by Brenda - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Leadership is a trait that translates well in terms of an individual doing well and/or excelling in their chosen career and area of expertise. But, the question of whether or not it is a necessity for doing well in college is another story. It definitely does not hurt a person's chances of good performance in academia on a college level, but it does not alone guarantee success- or if not present guarantee failure.

If a student is not a leader, it does not automatically mean that they won't succeed. I believe that leaders are definitely in the minority in college. They may even be cultivated in the university atmosphere. But, are not a required personality trait for a successful academic life in college.

I believe that as long as a student is determined to focus, pursue their goals, fight through all of life's distractions and get any help they may need when and if that comes up, they will succeed. The determined individual comes in all guises, not just the leader.

All leaders are not determined, just as all determined persons are not what one would call leaders. I do believe that following the university experience, an individual can gain leadership inclination and ability when dealing with the real world. Yet, that leadership tendency does not have to show up in college at all to ensure success.

Leadership skills are helpful and can be acquired through time. They definitely have a place and are present in some individuals. But, they are definitely not a prerequisite to a successful college career.
