Utilizing Personal Strengths for College Success by Brandon - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Throughout a person’s college career, they will experience a variety of challenges that will test their acquired skills. Though taxing on the student psyche, these trials will serve as stepping stones to adulthood and will demonstrate the likeliness of college success. These tribulations in a students career will test many skill sets such as those involved with leadership including time management, problem solving, motivation, and decision making.Though these skills may give a student a upper hand in a competitive job market, a students success in college is not exclusively dependent on these skills.

By stating that a students success is contingent on having leadership skills is an overgeneralization of what is expected in the college setting. The goal of a college is to develop a student to their fullest potential and bring out qualities of a student that may have not been originally accessible. However, not all people’s personalities allow them to be leaders. A large multitude of people prefer to stay behind the scenes, maintain a passive role, and end up extremely successful throughout college and even maintain the qualifications to land a quality job post-graduation. Students with withdrawn personalities that may lack what some define as “leadership qualities,” may still excel in areas of research and studies that give them a competitive edge in college studies.

It is important to note however, that students with leadership skill sets have a different sort of edge over those who are not. Those with leadership qualities are more likely to take initiative in group projects and ensure the success and drive of various assignments. Often, these leadership students will be more charismatic and likely to take charge in the classroom. These are important qualities that can be more fine tuned throughout their college career, and can make an impact on the ultimate success of the student.

Though leadership skills play a role in a students college studies, these skills are not crucial nor necessary for a students ultimate college or life success. A student may learn skills pertaining to leadership or better fine tune these skills, however not every person is equal in regards to the skill set of leadership qualities, nor does it ultimately constitute success or failure within the college community. There is much more necessary for college success, and it often depends on fine tuning the available skills, as well as finding new skills within each individual student.
