Goal to Persevere by Brandi - September 2020 Scholarship Essay
When the pandemic began, all of my previous career goals ended. My college shut down my program and moved it three hours away to another community college that I could not attend. I felt shattered as I had to completely change my major and switch to an online school that I had never gone to before. What could be my biggest goal for this year, you may ask, after such an abrupt change in everything I was already doing before? I aspire to persevere through this transition from cardiac sonography into psychology studies, and my goal is to take these changes in stride and continue to show my ability to go forward.
I attended Ivy Tech Community College before all of this happened, and I was a 4.0 student that had never missed a day. I won an award as an honored member of Phi Theta Kappa, and I was even in the Student Leadership Program where I attended a conference and earned a medal. Things fell apart when I was about to start my 17-month study of sonography to get my degree. Due to their changes, I was forced to give up my seat after being one of the top 8 students to qualify for the sonography program. I joined Walden University not too long after this, and I had decided to pursue psychology instead. I am just into the swing of it, but I have set my goals clear for myself. I won't let anything else stand in my way from getting through my education, and I won't give up even when my path takes a sudden detour.
Despite some of my credits not transferring, and losing a lot of money in scholarships and grants due to this decision I made, my goal is to keep going forward. I will get through another set of introductory classes and continue to fight this uphill battle. I am unsure how I will pay for my schooling, and I am unsure how I will pay for my bills on top of it. I do know that the only other option is surrendering, which is not a viable option for me. Everyone is facing difficult times, and our world is rapidly changing to adapt to the threats and needs around us. I will continue to adapt to the world.
