What class do you think deserves more emphasis in school and why? by Blake - November 2021 Scholarship Essay

I think the class that should deserve more emphasis in school would be interpersonal communication because of the technology-filled world we live in, but also because it is a vital skill for life in general and can change the way your life turns out.

With the rise in popularity of the computer, cell phone and the ensuing social media apps, came the decrease in use and, some might argue, need to talk with people directly. Why talk with someone face to face when you can just send them a text message, email, or video? I feel that these advances in technology, while very beneficial in many aspects, has also hindered our social skills as a society. The upcoming generation needs to be skillful technology users, but also be able to say a meaningful and complete sentence to people in person.

Talking with people can be very difficult for some people and having a class in school that could teach and expound these skills could have a big impact in someone’s life. For instance, when applying for most jobs, an interview is usually required to obtain that job. I don’t think the interview would end well if after every question asked you, a text message was received to answer. There are multiple times throughout life where people are going to need to talk to people face to face. Relying too heavily on technology makes it even more difficult because there’s less practice talking to people and learning to read facial features, etc.…

Having good interpersonal communication skills can have an impact on your life. If you can speak to others, and maybe even groups, well then that can be a great leadership quality. Or it could make for more willingness to talk to that special someone you’ve been eyeing the whole school year. If you never get up the courage to talk to them, then there’s never the chance that a relationship could blossom. Having the interpersonal communication skills would also increase your confidence in performing these and other actions.

While there are many reasons as to why an interpersonal communications class would be beneficial, I feel these are important for us as a society.
