Re: Varsity Tutors College Scholarship Contest Application for July 1-July 15, 2017
To Whom It May Concern,
I recently graduated from Cape Coral High School and was awarded my International Bachelorette (“IB”) degree. With my IB degree, I will be able to place out of my first year of college, at a minimum. I am an incoming Florida Gulf Coast University (“FGCU”) student who will begin school at FGCU on August 21, 2017. I submit this essay for the Varsity Tutors monthly scholarship. For July, Varsity Tutors poses the following question: “Imagine you have been asked to give an educational TED Talk. Describe what your talk will entail and why.” As such, I submit the following idea.
Finding good mentors, advisors and employers is an essential component to one’s personal and professional development. But how does one best go about finding these great, resourceful people who could potentially affect the outcomes of our lives forever? I would like to give a TED Talk about the importance of networking by attending community or educational events that interest you, and make sure you briefly introduce yourself to at least one person being honored or interviewed, tell them why you looked forward to their event and thank them for their time. It may seem difficult or time consuming at first, but you will get to meet some very interesting people. After you do this often enough, it becomes second nature. You may not know exactly how this new person can fit into your life at this exact moment, but you may need to call on that person in the future. So, I mark my calendar accordingly, e.g. in the event notes, I’ll write “Met artist and local angler Al Hoffacker at his art opening at the SBDAC “Strictly Native and Untamed Wildlife Photography” in the notes section of my event for July 7, 2017 where I met Mr. Hoffacker during the Downtown Fort Myers Art Walk. I enjoy visual art a lot. And while I am a chemistry major and plan to attend medical school after I graduate from FGCU, maybe I will need some advice from a local nature photographer someday. You never know!
Thank you in advance for your time and consideration and the opportunity to compete in this interesting scholarship opportunity. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at 239-410-503 or n.binh1998@gmail.com.
Sincerely,
